A distillery making interesting products, in a wonderful old industrial building near the centre of Nashville.
Following on with my trip from Birmingham, I arrived in Nashville for a night and after checking in was keen to find a distillery or two to visit - as it turns out Corsair was not far away and so off I went for a walk to build up my thirst for a dram or two.
First impressions: The Corsair "Brewstillery" (ugh) is just one business inside a huge building called Marathon Village in Nashville. They run tours every hour or so. It's in a kind of industrial estate but there's an obvious creative/startup vibe to the area and a few other distilleries and things located nearby including Nelson's Greenbrier. The layout when you arrive is kind of confusing - I walked into the wrong area and was told to head back in and go into the bar to join a tour. The place needs some decent signage frankly.
The Tour: You can sign on to join a tour from the bar where you can also buy a pint of the Corsair produced beers on tap. Half a pint runs at around $5-6 which is damned expensive. It was good beer but it certainly was not cheap. The tours are relaxed and their process and some of the 'odd' creations they make are explained, which is good. There's not much to see though and it's all located in a single back room. A few stills, a few barrels, the distillery cat, and then you're moved back into the main tasting room. The tour runs at about $8.00 if I remember correctly.
Tastings: You'll get to try around four different whiskies from the distillery, I tried triple smoke, oatrage, one of the rye offerings and something else that was a bit, weird. On the whole the whiskies were pretty good, and you can buy them for about retail from the distillery.
Overall: A distillery making interesting products, but all a bit too hipster for my liking.
