If you're a bit bored of the regular supermarket offerings, want to challenge your palate a bit, and don't have a bomb to spend, get a bottle of the Laddie Classic.
You know what's better than a quality, Scottish single malt whisky? Even better than a bottle of Bruichladdich? Why, a FREE bottle of course! And what a bottle it is, resplendent in pale blue; reminding me of Wedgewood pottery. Even the girls in the office "oo-ed" when it came free from the confines of it's plastic packaging prison. I got this whisky in the post courtesy of the lovely people at Bruichladdich after winning their Friday Twitter "best photo outside your window" competition.
In case you're wondering, the beautiful photo in question was this:
If that doesn't speak of terroir, I don't know what will. So without further ado...
On the nose: Crab apples, lemon myrtle, honeycomb, mint, and a whiff of lemon Pledge. I'd say that you could smell this all day, but then you wouldn't be drinking it!
The taste: More lemons, vanilla, honey and quite a bit more smoke than I imagined on first nosing. Not too much though - it lifts as opposed to hinders the flavours. Reminds me a bit of an Irish Whiskey for some reason.
The finish: Long and lingering. The 50% ABV really tells here, as it rounds out with a nutty / smokey tone.
Personally... This whisky achieves my best value for money rating ever. It's already excellent value, but only a freebie can earn top marks of 100/100! Honestly though, if you're a bit bored of the regular supermarket offerings, want to challenge your palate a bit (but not too much), and don't have a bomb to spend, get a bottle of the Laddie Classic.
